He has ~$4000, and seems fixated on plain Jane saab 9-5s. And it seems anything above 100,000 miles is too high, so there is literally nothing fun cheap and under that. He doesn't seem to understand that 85k hard miles is worse than 150k well cared for miles. Ugh, i think I'm just going to stop caring and walk away.

Fun is a pretty subjective term and I can have loads of fun in a $400 Geo. If he is fixed on under 100k miles, I hope he likes Kias.

Yeah, what I mean is a performance-oriented car, like an Impreza 2.5rs, Chrysler conquest, Audi coupe quattro, RX-7, and the like. Also trying to get him into a manual car. He sees the turbo in the 9-5 and thinks its special. He is thinking of insurance costs too, which is ok, but he's being a little to conservative.

If you're in America, stay away from any 80s Audi under 5000$ unless you are a mechanical Yoda.

What he needs is a volvo turbo. He'll think it's special because it's a turbo but it will be easy for him to own because it will be a low pressure turbo.

It was a '90 coupe that had been gone through by an Audi enthusiast.

Still a horrible idea. Would not recommend unless your friend is, or has, an experienced tech. My dad was an audi tech in the late 80s so without him I wouldn't have kept my 200 after the first breakdown.....

Lolol. His dad recently bought a 9-5 used, and them his Mom bought a Volvo, and now he is looking at Saabs, it's really weird how his family changes over completely when one person gets a certain kind of car.

In addition to staying away from 80s Audi's, I'd avoid rotaries. Although I do fully intend to get an FB by next summer, they are not for the faint of heart. You have to be willing to put in a lot of wrench time to keep them reliable, and finding a mechanic that will touch them can be challenging.
Have you considered a GTI? They strike a wonderful balence between fun and practical

Have you been in a 9-5 much? It's not that weird. They're not at all bad to drive, although they roll embarrassingly, and they're very comfortable and solid-feeling.
